A male name. Latin Germanus ‘a German’. There were two French saints of this name, St Germain of Auxerre (c. 378-448) and St Germain of Paris (c. 496­c. 576). It was introduced into England by the Normans, and there is one Germanus in Domesday Book. It was not uncommon in the 13th C and gave rise to various surnames, e.g. German, Germans, Germain, Jarman, Jermyn, &c. Jerman and German mayne are found as christian name: as late as the beginning of the 17th C.
