From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A female name. the popular English form of Julian or Juliana (q.v.); very common in the Middle Ages, especially in the diminutive forms Gill, Jill, Gillot, Gillet which gave rise to many surnames. Gillot or Jillet became a designation for a flighty girl whence probably, by a process of syncopation, the word jilt. In the 17th C it was legally declared that Julian and Gillian were different names, like Anne and Agnes (qq.v.). Gillian went out of use in the 18th and 19th C, but has been revived in the 20th.
