A male name. Old German Godafrid, compound of Guda ‘god’ and frithu ‘peace’. There was a corresponding Old English Godfrith, but it was not common and the medieval Godfry and Godefry seems to represent a Norman version of the Old German name rather than a survival of the Old English one. It was common in the 12th and 13th C and gave rise to the surnames Godfrey, Godfree, Godfreed, &c. In later times it has sometimes been confused with Geoffrey (q.v.), tat was quite separate in the Middle Ages, appearing in Latin as Godefridus while Geoffrey was Galfridus or Goisfridus. Godefridus Domesday Book 1086, Curia Regis Rolls 1187-1220, Pipe Roll 1161. Godfrey Hundred Rolls 1273. Godefray Hundred Rolls 1273.
