A male name. Old German Godafrid, compound of Guda ‘god’ and frithu ‘peace’. There was a corresponding Old English Godfrith, but it was not common and the medieval Godfry and Godefry seems to represent a Norman version of the Old German name rather than a survival of the Old English one. It was common in the 12th and 13th C and gave rise to the surnames Godfrey, Godfree, Godfreed, &c. In later times it has sometimes been confused with Geoffrey (q.v.), tat was quite separate in the Middle Ages, appearing in Latin as Godefridus while Geoffrey was Galfridus or Goisfridus.
