Grissel Forename Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A female name. the second element of Griselda or Griseldis seems to be Old German hild ‘battle’, ‘strife’, the first may be Old German grisja ‘grey’, though an Old German name Grishild is not actually on record. It is also possible that it represents the recorded Old German Cristehildis, a compound of Christ and hild. It is not found in early use as a christian name, and its adoption was no doubt due to the literary influence of Chaucer, who took the story of Patient Griselda (the Clerk’s Tale) from Boccaccio. Dekker wrote a play on the subject. The name is used mainly in Scotland where it is still quite common, usually in the form Grizel. Lyford 1655 gives Grishild, but Grissel, Grizzel or Grisel were the usual forms by that time.
This name is said by some to mean ‘stout lady’ in German. Lower, after speaking of the surname Grisell, Grissell, and the Scottish Saint Grizelda or Grizel, says a less complimentary derivation would be from grisel, a pig. The name is found written Griselda, and is from the Old German greis-held, for greis-alt, a grey noble (lady).
