Gunilda Forename Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A female name. Old Norse Gunnhildr, compound of gunn(r) ‘war’ and hild(r) ‘battle’, ‘strife’. There was a corresponding Old German Gundichild, but it was the Norse name which was introduced into England by the Danes; one of the dd. of King Cnut was named Gunhild. The name survived the Norman Conquest, and was in use until the 14th C, often in the Norman form Quenild. The English form seems to have been Gunnell. The surnames Gunnell and Quennell are derived from these forms. The word gun is probably from Gunne. a pet-form of Gunhild (see Oxford English Dictionary s.v, gun); an account of munitions at Windsor Castle in 1330 mentions ‘una magna balista quae vocatur domina Gunilda’, and doubtless the same nickname was later used for cannon.
