A male name. Old German Chustaffus, the second element of which is staf ‘staff’; the first element is doubtful, E. Förstemann, Altdeutsches Namenbuch suggests the root Chud, connected with Old German chûton ‘to meditate’. Gustaf (or Gosta) is chiefly a Swedish name, but in the 17th C the fame of the Swedish king Gustaf Adolf (15941632) (Gustavus Adolphus, as he is usually called) spread it over Europe (e.g. German Gustav, French Gustave). In England the latinized form Gustavus has occasionally been used; an early example is Gustavus Barratt, christened at St Giles Cripplegate in 1638.
This English name is dying out, despite its rich historical associations, while in France Gustave (cf. German Gustaf) remains very popular. In Teutonic, it signifies either ‘the divine staff’ or ‘the staff of the Goths’ (cf. pillar of the Church).
From the Swedish name Gustaf, which some translate ‘Goth’s staff;’ others derive it from the Su. -Goth God, God or good, and staf staff. But Gustaf is more probably corrupted from Augustus. See Ihre’s Lex.
