From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A male name. Old German Haimo from haimi ‘house’, ‘home’. The name was introduced into England by the Normans and soon became common. The two forms Hamo, Hamon represent the Old French cas-sujet and cas-régime. The diminutive Hamelot, Hamelin, Hamnet and Hamonet were all in general use and gave rise to the surnames Hamlet, Hamlett, Hamblet, Hamlin, Hamblin, Hambley, Hamnet, Hamnett, &c. Shakespeare’s only s. was named Hamnet (after one of his godfathers). Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, bore a different name, the Icelandic Amlóthi, which appears as Amleth in Saxo, and was turned by English translators into the more familiar Hamlet. Hamlet and Hamnet survived into the 18th C (cf. Hamlet Winstanley the painter 1700-56). Hamon is till used in the Norfolk family of Lestrange. A modern example of Hamo is the sculptor Sir Hamo Thornycroft (1850-1925).

This English and Norwegian m. ‘Christian’, deriving from Teutonic, means ‘home’; it is dying out in Britain. Occasionally, Haymo.
This is still found as a male baptismal name. It is derived from Hamo, who came over with the Conqueror; perhaps from the Icelandic hamr, a skin (Helreith Brynhildar, hamo, Anglo-Saxon homa, skin) found in úlf-hamr, the nickname of a mythological king, which Cleasby translates ‘wolf-skin.’
