The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names (1947) by E. G. Withycombe

Is apparently in neither Yonge nor Swan: it would therefore seem to have derived from the surname (‘hard lea’, perhaps ‘stony meadow’). Its two most famous ‘exponents’ are Hartley Coleridge, the luckless poet (1796-1849), and Hartley Withers, sane and brilliant writer on economics. But a boy so named in this irreverent century runs the risk of being nicknamed ‘Jam’ or ‘Jams’.
