A male name. Old German Hariman, compound of harja ‘host’, ‘army' and mana ‘man’. The name was introduced into England by the Normans, and Hermannus occurs in Domesday Book. The French forms of the name, Armant, Armand, became in English Armin, which survived until recently in Norfolk. The surnames Harman, Harmon, Armand, Arment, &c., are derived from it. The modGer Hermann is occasionally used in England, usually by families of German Jewish origin.
