A female name. Greek ‘Ερμιόνη, f. derivative of Hermes, the name of a d. of Menelaus and Helen, the wife of Orestes. It was often used in 16th-C Literature, notably by Shakespeare for the queen in A Winter’s Tale, and it is from this that the modern use of Hermione as a christian name is derived. The German Hermine is a different name, probably a f. form of Herman (q.v.).
Greek, ‘maiden of high degree.’ Hermione, lovely daughter of Menelaus and Helen, after having been forced by her father to marry Neoptolemus, was able, the latter murdered, to marry Orestes, to whom she had, years before, been promised. In Shakespeare’s Winter’s Tale, she is the loved and much-wronged wife of Leontes.
A name derived from Hermione ‘Ερμιονη, a daughter of Mars and Venus, and who married Cadmus; also a daughter of Menelaus and Helen. The name is derived from ‘Ηρμης, Mercury.
