A female name. Greek 'Ερω the name of (1) a d. of Danaus, (2) a d. of Priam, (3) the beloved of Leander. The etymology of the word is doubtful, it is unconnected with the common noun hero, and may be from the name of the goddess Hera. The modern use of Hero as a christian name is the result of Shakespeare’s use of it in Much Ado about Nothing.
In Greek, ‘a lady,’ ‘mistress of the house,’ therefore cognate with Hera, the white-armed queen of Olympus, and with German herr, herrinn, Hero probably derives from the m. form ηρως (hērōs). It is a name of some note, for ‘it belonged first to one of the Danaïdes, then to a daughter of Priam, then to the maiden whose light led Leander to his perilous breasting of the Hellespont (see also Leander), and from whom Shakespeare probably took it for the lady apparently “done to death by slanderous tongues”’ (Yonge). Now rare.
