Her'-od, the glory of the skin. 1. He was surnamed the Great, was the son of Antipater, the Idumean, born B. C. 71. At the age of twenty-five, he was made, by his father, governor of Galilee, and distinguished himself by the suppression of a band of robbers. It was in the latter part of his reign that Jesus Christ was born. 2. Herod, called Philip. See Matt xiv. 3; Mark vi. 17.
