Hervi Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A male name. this is probably the Breton Haerveu, French Hervé, the name of a favourite Breton saint and poet; it is said to mean ‘bitter’. Another possible derivation is the Old German Harivig, compound of harja ‘host', ‘army’, and viga ‘battle’, which was early latinized as Harveus. In either case the name was introduced into England at the Norman Conquest and soon became common. In Domesday Book there are 11 tenants of this name, including two who had held Tempore Regis Edwardi (In the Reign of Edward the Confessor), and it continued in use throughout the 12th and 13th C, giving rise to the surnames Harvey, Hervey, Harvie, Harveson. There is no record of its use in the 14th to 18th C, but it occurs in the 19th C (e.g. Harvey Goodwin, Bishop of Carlyle, 1818-91) and is still sometimes used.

Herveus Domesday Book 1086, Curia Regis Rolls 1187-1215. Harvey Hundred Rolls 1273. Hervi HP. 1273.
