The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names (1947) by E. G. Withycombe

The same as Old and Middle High German names Hildebrand and Hiltiprant. Mr. Ferguson says Hildebrand was the name of one of the heroes of the Niebelungen Lied, and that the name probably means battle sword; from the Anglo Saxon hild battle, and brand. Others translate it var. ‘very fervent, hero, leader, leader of the Brenni;’ but, as Wachter shows, the name is the same with Childebrand, from child-brand, which might translate either ‘distinguished youth’ or ‘distinguished warrior.’
