Hosanna Forename Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
(m., f.) a Hebrew word which in Greek became ωσάννα or ώσάννα, in Latin Hosanna or Osanna. It was an exclamation in liturgical use amongst the Jews, meaning ‘save now' or ‘save pray’, and was shouted before Jesus on his last entry into Jerusalem. The form Osanna was used in England from the Old English gospels until the 16th C when the versions of Tyndale and Coverdale have Hosanna or Hosianna. It is found as a christian name for both men and women from the beginning of the 13th C, usually in the French form Osanne or Ozanne, but it did not remain in use for very long. It seems to have been revived as a man’s name in the 17th C, for Lyford 1655 gives Hosanna in his list of men’s names. An Hosannah Johnson has been noted in 1880, but this was a woman.
Ho-zan'-nah, save, I beseech thee. A form of benediction. Matt. xxi. 9, 15.
