Hubertus Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A male name. Old German Hugubert, compound of hugu ‘heart’, ‘mind’, and berhta ‘bright. There was a corresponding Old English Hygebeorht, but it was not common and the popularity of the name in the Middle Ages was undoubtedly derived from the cult of St Hubert, Bishop of Liége, the patron saint of huntsmen. The surnames Hubert, Hobart, Hubbard (from the usual English form of the name), Hubbert, &c., are derived from it and testify to its former popularity, but it seems to have died out after the 14th C, and Charlotte Mary Yonge, History of ChristianNames, 2 vols. 1863. Revised ed. 1884 treats it as obsolete. It was revived in the later 19th C and is now not uncommon.
