Imogen Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A female name. this name, from the heroine of Shakespeare’s play of Cymbeline, has been used as a christian name during the last 50 years or so. Imogen appears to be a misprint in the Folio for Innogen, which is how the name appears in Shakespeare’s source, Holinshed. Innogen is also the usual form in Geoffrey of Monmouth, who makes her the wife of Brutus. Innogen actually appears in the Quarto Much Ado about Nothing in the list of dramatis personae as the name of the wife of Leonato, a character who does not appear in the play. The etymology of Innogen (sometimes also Ygnoge) is unknown.

The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names (1947) by E. G. Withycombe

IMOGINE. An old English f. name of doubtful etymology: H. A. Long supposes it to mean ‘last-born’; Charlotte Yonge thinks that it may be ‘a Shakespearean version of Ygnoge, daughter of Pandrasus, emperor of Greece, and wife of Brutus’; Professor Weekley indicates that Imogen is a First Folio misprint for Holinshed’s Innagon. Its modern use—e. g. in A. E. W. Mason’s novel, Sapphire—owes much to the charm of Shakespeare’s Imogen in Cymbeline.
