Ingram Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A male name. either Old German Angilramnus or Ingilramnus (corresponding to Old English Engelram and Ingilram). The second element in either case is hraban ‘raven’; the first is either angil ‘angel’, or Ingil, a derivative of Ingvi, an old hero-name. Both names were fairly common in Old German; but phonetically the Old French Ingelram, later Enguerran, is more likely to come from Ingilramnus. The name was brought to England by the Normans, a notable example being Ingelram Count of Ponthieu, brother- in-law of the Conqueror. Enguerran became in English Ingran and Ingram, and gave rise to the surnames Ingram, Ingraham, Ingry. It is found as a christian name as late as the 17th C. It is sometimes found in use at the present day, but apparently always as an adaptation of the surname.
