A male name. Greek ‘Ιππόλυτος ‘letting horses loose’, the name of the s. of Theseus and Hippolyta Queen of the Amazons. It was the name of a Roman saint martyred in 252. A church dedicated to him in Rome gave its name to a cardinal. Ippolitus, Ypolitus are found in the 13th C, and a 14th-C Legendary gives the name of the saint as Ypolit. The village of Ippollitts in Hertfordshire takes its name from the dedication of the church to St Hippolytus, and exhibits many and strange perversions of the name, culminating in Polledge. Another church dedicated to this saint is that at Ryme Intrinseca in Dorset, and in 1607 a baby in the neighbouring village of Holnest was christened Epowlett.
