Is from Eirene, the Greek goddess of peace, the name denoting ‘messenger of peace’ and the Latin form being Irene; the name is, properly, trisyllabic. At Rome, however, the goddess was known as Pax. ‘ She was worshipped at Athens and Rome; and in the latter city a magnificent temple was built to her by the emperor Vespasian... Pax is represented on coins as a youthful female, holding in her left arm a cornucopia, and in her right hand an olive branch or the staff of Mercury’ (Blakeney). There are four Saints Irene, all martyrs (Benedictines).
