Isac occurs twice in Domesday Book, and the name was used from time to time in the following centuries, sometimes, but by no means always, by Jews. The surnames Isaac, Isaacs, Isaacson, Isacke are derived from it. After the Reformation it was much more commonly used. The spelling Izaak came in m the 17th C. It has now almost completely dropped out of use.

In Hebrew, signifies ‘laughter’. It is little used except among the Jews, who often bestow it in honour of that patriarch Isaac, who, son of Abraham and Sarah, figured in a dramatic episode, which he survived to marry Rebecca and of her beget Jacob and Esau.
From’Ισαακ, the Greek form of the Scripture name, in Hebrew יִצְחָק Yitschhák, which some translate ‘laughing;’ others ‘sporting.’ Fuerstius renders the name ‘spötter, lacher,’ i. e. mocker, great laugher. St. Jerome says it was not Sarah who laughed, but Abraham. The nicknames are Ikey and Nykin.
