A male name. Old French Ive, Ives, Ivon, probably from a Celtic name in Iv-. E. Förstemann, Altdeutsches Namenbuch derives it from Old German Iv ‘yew', but the early establishment of the name in Brittany, and its being borne by several Breton and Cornish saints, make a Celtic origin more likely. The St Ives who gave his name to the Hunts town was a legendary person, said to have come to England from Persia in the 7th C. Yvon, Yves was the name of one of the 12 peers who fell at Roncesvalles, and it is common in Old French romances. It was brought to England at the time of the Norman Conquest, one of the best- known examples being Ivo de Tailbois who m. an Englishwoman, sister of Edwin and Morcar. It was a favourite name with the Anglo-Normans and it, and its diminutive, gave rise to many surnames, such as Ive, Ives, Iveson, Ivatt, Ivatts, Ivett, Ivetts, Ivens. In the Latin form Ivo it has been revived in modern times.
