A female name. Jacoba occurs from time to time in medieval Latin records as a woman’s name. Probably the women in question were actually christened and called James. For example, one of the three dd. of Richard Emelden who died in 1333, is called Jacoba. In the proof of her age, 1339, one of the witnesses said he remembered the date of her baptism because ‘it seemed to him wonderful that he called her by a boy’s name when she was herself a girl’. She is usually called Joan in later records, but after her marriage to Sir Alan Clavering there is a referenceto ‘Sir Alan and James his wife’. In the 18th Catholic Scottish Jacobites gave the names Jacoba and Jacobina to their dd., and Jacobina still survives in Scotland.
