A Sanskrit name, meaning: Daughter of the Shah Jehan, who faithfully shared with him the seven years’ imprison­ment preceding his death. Shah Jehan, who, in that glorious architectural achievement the Taj Mahal, which cost fifteen million dollars, paid tribute to his favorite wife, had a wholly different side to his char­acter. In his palace there are shown today a series of dungeons, lighted only by high grated apertures, where others of his mates who happened to displease his highness were snatched from their little golden cages, imprisoned, and then taken to a neighboring dungeon and hung. Afterward they were cut down and dropped into a secret passage 300 feet long, con­necting with the river. His son Aurangzib, succeeding to the throne, caused his father, for his cruelties, to be confined in one of these dungeons; but he was later carried to a beautiful octagonal pavilion beside the river, where he died gazing upon the Taj.
