A male name. Greek 'Ιερωώνυμος ‘sacred name’. This was the name of a king of Syracuse (grandson of Hiero) and of a Rhodian peripatetic philosopher, and thirdly of St Eusebius Hieronymus Sophronicus (340-420) or St Jerome, whose Latin translation of the Bible was the basis of the Vulgate. He was much reverenced in the Middle Ages and his name was used in Italy, where it became Geronimo, and France, where it was reduced to Jérôme. In England Jeronimus, Geronim, Geronimus (variously misspelt) occur in Latin records from the end of the 12th C. The English pronunciation of the name is indicated by the surnames Jerome, Jerram, Jerrems, Jarram. Ieram occurs in 1556 and Hierom in 1675, but the initial J was usual. A f. form Jeromia occurs at Bury (Lancs) in 1615.

A name corrupted from Hieronymus, Greek ‘Ιερωνυμος, which some translate ‘holy law (ιερος and νομος); others, perhaps more correctly, sacred name,’ (ιερον and ονομα). It is a curious fact in connexion with this name that the grandfather of Hieronymus, whom the latter succeeded as King of Sicily, should have been named ‘Ιερων (Hieron).
