Je-rew'-sa-lem, the vision or possession of peace. Formerly called Jebus and Salem. Josh. xviii. 28; Heb. vii. 2. The capital of Judea, situated partly in the tribe of Benjamin, and partly in the tribe of Judah. It was not completely reduced by the Israelites till the time of David. 2 Sam. v. 6 9. Here was the centre of true worship, and the place where God did in a peculiar manner dwell, first in the tabernacle, afterwards in the temple. It was taken and burnt by Titus, A. D. 70, in accordance with the prophecies of Jesus Christ.
