A male name. Hebrew ‘hated,’ ‘persecuted’. The story of Job was a favourite subject of medieval plays, interludes, &c., and C. W. Bardsley, Dictionary of English and WelshSurnames (pub. 1901) would derive the surnames Job, Jobson, Jobling, Jopling, Jupp, Jubs. It is, however, more probable that the medieval name Jupp or Job represents an English equivalent of Old German Joppo (probably a hypocoristic form of Judbert, &c.). The Biblical name, however, came into use after the Reformation, though it was never common.

The Biblical Job, whose historicity requires a considerable amount of acute analysis, originally bore—according to the Alexandrian version—the name of Jobab, ‘shouting’; the most general theory is that Job means ‘persecuted’; but the most suitable (though not, therefor, the best) is that it denotes ‘penitent’, as Mohammed believed.
