From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A female name. the most usual f. form of John (q.v.). Jehane or Jehanne became suddenly common in the 12th C in the south of France. The usual English form Jhone, Johan came into use soon after and was very common in the ensuing centuries together with its diminutive Jonet. By the 16th C it was the third commonest English female name and was apparently considered vulgar (e.g. Shakespeare’s ‘greasy Joan doth keel the pot’) and was largely superseded by Jane tq.v.) which had developed from Jehane, whereas Joan came from Johan. Joan was revived at the beginning of the present century (Jane having been overtaken by the fate which had earlier befallen Joan) and is once more a favourite name.
