Joanna occurs in the Authorized Version of the Bible of the New Testament in St Luke’s Gospel, once as the name of a man in the genealogy of Jesus, and again as the name of one of the women who ministered to Jesus. It is apparently a Greek spelling of Hebrew Johanan (see John). It was first used as a woman’s christian name after the Reformation. Johanna was the usual medieval Latin form of Joan (q.v.), and was taken into use, like other medieval Iatinizations, in the 18th C.

JOANNA, the more usual, being a ‘derivative’ of the other. Once a fairly common name, and a dignified (cf. Joanna Baillie, the poetess), it is now rather uncommon and apt to provoke derision, the more so as, in rhyming slang, it represents pianner, which the educated spell—and pronounce—piano. ‘This name,’ in Hebrew, ‘grace of the Lord’, ‘comes from the same root as Hannah and Anne—i. e.,... chaanach, “favour,”... “grace,” combined with Iah,... Jehovah, together giving Johanna, the feminine form of Johannes of which John is a contraction,’ Swan.
