M. Hebrew, ‘a dove.’ Jonah, sent in C9 B. C. to prophesy against Nineveh, sailed instead for Tarshish. In a tempest, he was, by lot, cast into the sea; he was swallowed by ‘a great fish’—not a whale, obviously—and, after some uncomfortable moments, ejected upon the land. The name is seldom bestowed, for it has come to be generic for a bearer of ill-luck.
