Joscelin Forename Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
(m., f.) Old German Gautelen, Gauzelen, a combination of Gauta (from the same root as the folkname Gothic) and the suffix lin (= English -ling) which was not originally a diminutive. E. Förstemann, Altdeutsches Namenbuch gives many examples of the name from the 7th to the 11th C, including several in the form Joscelin. The name was introduced into England by the Normans (Gozelinus occurs 11 times and Goselinus and Goscelinus 8 times in Domesday Book), and it was common throughout the Middle Ages, giving rise to the surnames Joslin, Josselin, Joscelyne, Gosling, and many other variants. It was rare after the 14th C, but has never altogether died out. The use of Jocelyn as a girl’s name seems to be quite modern and is not mentioned by Charlotte Mary Yonge, History of ChristianNames, 2 vols. 1863. Revised ed. 1884.

A female name, found written Joscelyne and Jocelin, and by corruption Joscelind. A diminutive formed from the Latin justus. The German name Jost is rendered Joscelin.
