A male name. Hebrew Judah ‘praise', the name of the 4th s. of Jacob and Leah. Judas is the heilenized form, and Jude an abbreviation of it. It was not used by the Jews until post-exilic times, when it became common. As the name of Judas Iscariot it never had a chance of being used as a christian name, in spite of the popularity in the Middle Ages of Judas Maccabaeus. The Authorized Version of the Bible of the Bible in some places calls the apostle Judas (‘not Iscariot’) Jude, and after the Reformation Jude was sometimes used as a christian name, as was also Judah, sometimes as a woman’s name.
M. A contraction of the obsolete Judah and its variant Judas, it derives, as one would expect, from Hebrew and signifies ‘praise of the Lord’, though, even of the earliest holder of this name, it would be more true to say that he got no further than being his father’s, or more probably his mother’s, joy. Judah was besmirched by Judas, the traitor; even the nobility of Judas Maccabaeus and the eloquent apostolate and gallant death of St. Jude (brother of James the Less) have not freed the name of all stigma; nevertheless, Jude lingers in rural England and is green in literary memory because of the realistic power of Hardy’s Jude the Obscure, reprinted in 1895 from Harper’s Magazine.
