A female name. the name of the d. of Latinus and 2nd wife of Aeneas, of unknown etymology. It seems to have come into use, like other classical names, after the Renaissance, and is found at the end of the 17th C. In the 18th C it became something of a favourite, perhaps owing to the poet Thomson, who substituted it for Ruth in his version of the Book of Ruth. In the 13th and 14th C there is occasional record of a name Lavina, Lavena which may possibly be a version of Lavinia (which would be familiar from Virgil’s Aeneid); on the other hand it may represent some such name as Old German Leobuina which is on record.
