It seems to have come into use, like other classical names, after the Renaissance, and is found at the end of the 17th C. In the 18th C it became something of a favourite, perhaps owing to the poet Thomson, who substituted it for Ruth in his version of the Book of Ruth. In the 13th and 14th C there is occasional record of a name Lavina, Lavena which may possibly be a version of Lavinia (which would be familiar from Virgil’s Aeneid); on the other hand it may represent some such name as Old German Leobuina which is on record.
