A female name. Latin laetitia ‘gladness'. It is not clear how or when the word came to be used as a christian name, but it was in general use in England in the 12th C and remained a favourite until the 17th C. The usual English form was Letice or Lettice, but the French Lece (latinized as Lecia) was common in the 12th and 13th C. The surnames Lettice,Lett, Letts, Letson (from the nickname Lett), and possibly some of the Leesons (from Lece) are derived from it. Lecelin a diminutive of Lece is also recorded. Lettice went out of fashion in the 18th C and was replaced by the Latin form Laetitia, but it has now come back into use. Letty is the usual pet-form.
