From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A female name. these names probably originated as pet-forms of Elizabeth (q.v.), cf. the German Lili for Elisabeth. Lillian is found as a christian name in England in the 16th C and Lillias at about the same time in Scotland; Lilian occurs as a surname as early as 1273 and looks like a diminutive in -on of Lily. Some of the many surnames Lilly, Lilley, Lyly, Liley, &c., may be from a christian name Lily, though it is not on record earlier than the 19th C, when it has no longer any connexion with Lilian, but is merely a flower- name adopted as a christian name. Lilias or Lillias has remained principally a Scottish name. Lillah appears to be a 19th-C invention, perhaps a mixture of Lily and Leila (q.v.).
