From the 17th C it is found anglicized as Leolin and Leoline and this is found as late as the 17th C (e.g. Sir Leoline Jenkins b. 1623, Principal of Jesus College Oxon). Camden gives it as Lewlin and Lyford 1655 says: ‘Lewellin like a lion; Latin.’ Lewis (q.v.) has also often been used as an anglicization of Llewellyn. A f. Leolina occurs in Curia Regis Rolls 1213.
M. From Celtic, it means either ‘lion-like’ or ‘lightning’: see Llew. Llewellyn the Great of Wales, Llewellyn ap Iorwerth, who, after his many victories, finally yielded to Henry II, and Llewellyn ap Gryffydd, another mighty warrior (d. 1282), endeared the name to Welshmen.
