A male name. this appears to have been a diminutive in -el of the Anglo-Norman name Love. Another diminutive was Lovet. Love was apparently the English form of louve ‘wolf’. Lovel and Lovet both occur in Domesday Book. The common surnames Lovel and Lovell, Lowell, Lovet, Lovett, Lovat are derived from them. Lovel was apparently also much used for dogs, e.g. the 15th-C rhyme on the favourites of Richard III, Ratcliffe, Catesby, and Lovel: The Rat, the Cat, and Lovel our dog Rule all England under the hog.
These names seem to have died out in the 14th or 15th C, but Love (the abstract noun) was used by the Puritans in the 17th C as a christian name.
