A male name. Latin Lucas, Greek Λουκάς, of or belonging to Lucania: the name of the third Evangelist. Both Lucas and the anglicized form Luke or Luck were commonly used in the Middle Ages, The name is not found in England before the Norman Conquest, and seems to have come into use in the 12th C. There are many surnames formed from Luke, Lucas and their diminutive, e.g. Luke, Lukes, Lucas, Luck, Luckett, Lucock, Lukin, Luckin &c.

Greek Loukas is Latin Lucanus, Greek ας being a frequent contraction for Latin -anus. Thus the third Evangelist (‘beloved physician and reputed painter’) is Loukas, i. e. Lukas, which becomes French Luc and English Luke. It is a manly ‘Christian’, now returning again to favour with Peter.

From the Latin name Lucas, in Greek Λουκας. Some maintain that the original name was Lucius. Stephanus says Lucas (Λουκας) is contracted from Lucanus (Lucan), like Silas from Silvanus; and according to Mabillon (Museo Italico) in some codices the full name Lucanus is prefixed to that of the Evangelist. Schleusner, Etym. Gud. p. 373, says Λουκας is both a Roman and a Greek name; but that according to others both Λευκας and Λουκας, are from λευκος, shining. But this Λευκος can hardly refer to Lucanus.
