Macaire Forename Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
An Irish m., it is probably an adaptation or a reduction of the Greek name, Macharios, probably in its Latin form, Macarius, especially as there were, in C4, two notable saints, Macarius the Younger and the Elder: in Classical Greek, μακάριος (makarios) is ‘blessèd’, ‘happy’, itself from μάκαρ, which is closer to our name but not its effective origin. In French, rather curiously, ‘de bonne heure ce nom (Macaire, ou Robert Macaire) a été pris pour signifier un homme dangereux... le nom généique aesfripons adroits et audacieux’ (Littré): here, plainly, are the same semantics as in the two opposing senses of blessed and French sacré.
