A North American Indian name, meaning: Woman. Both the derivations and meaning of this name are disputed by philologists. Its etymology suggests strongly an origin in the Sanskrit, whose antiquity as this world’s primal language seems to be disputed only by the Arabic. Maha is a common prefix to Sanskrit words, and we find in its glossaries a slight variation in two instances applied to woman, Mahila being defined as a woman female, and Mahela as a woman. It is interesting to discover that in widely separated tribes of North American Indians, Mahala is also the word for woman.
