A male name. Hebrew ‘one who causes to forget’, the name of the first-born of Joseph. Manasses is, rather surprisingly, found as the name of a tenant-in-chief in Domesday Book, and again of one Manasse Saluernille in 1160. It has sometimes been used in Ireland to represent Manus (see Magnus). After the Reformation it was sometimes used by Puritans in England, and later in the USA.
Ma-nas'-seh, forgetfulness, he that is forgotten. 1. The eldest son of Joseph, and grandson of the patriarch Jacob, Gen. xli. 51, born A. M. 2292. 2. The fifteenth king of Judah, the son and successor of Hezekiah. He was twelve years old when he began to reign, and reigned fifty-five years. 2 Kings xx. 21; xxi. 1, 2, &c. He was a wicked king, but was converted when in Babylon, in prison; and, after his return to Jerusalem, redressed, as much as possible, the evils he had caused. 3. A son of Pahath-Moab, who having married a strange wife, put her away on his return from Babylon. Ezra x. 30. 4. Son of Husham, under circumstances similar to the last mentioned. Ezra x. 33.
