Manfred Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A male name. Old German Manifred, compound of mana ‘man’ and frithu ‘peace’. It was brought to England by the Normans, and there is a Mainfridus in Domesday Book, but it never took root here. Byron’s poem of this name caused it to be used occasionally in the 19th C.

The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names (1947) by E. G. Withycombe

Originally, in Teutonic, Maginfred, ‘mighty peace,’ whence, by contraction, Manfred. The name has had some slight currency, thanks to King Manfred of Sicily (C13) and to the ‘hero’ of Byron’s dramatic poem, Manfred, 1817.

Name This Child (1959) by Eric Partridge

Some translate this name ‘mighty peace;’ others absurdly derive it from It. mano-freddo (say fredda), cold hand. It comes from the Old German name Manfrit, which Ferguson derives from frit, peace. It is properly from mund-fridy protecting man, i. e. protector.

Prænomina (1882) by Richard Stephen Charnock

Teutonic (masculine) - Man of peace.

What is Your Name? (1863) by Sophy Moody

A Teutonic name, meaning: Man of peace.
