From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A female name. Margerie was a French popular form of Marguerite (see Margaret) and it is found in England as early as 1194; Marjorie was a less usual spelling but is of about the same age. Margery was regarded as a separate name as early as the 13th C, and all connexion with Margaret was soon lost. Lyford 1655 derives it from the name of the herb marjoram. In the 18th and 19th C Margery almost disappeared except among poor country people, but it has now come back into general use. It is sometimes abbreviated to Margy. Marjorie is the usual spelling in Scotland.
