Martiniano is a variation of the name Martin, which in turn derives from the name Martin, which had its origin from the Latin Martinus, a Roman name derived from the god of war, Mars, equivalent to the Greek god of war, Ares. For this reason the name Martiniano is associated with the war.
The first Portuguese versions of that name (Martino, Martinos) appeared in Portugal in the 12th century.

Another important historical character that was based on the name Martiniano, was Matinho Lutero (Martin Luther, in German). Luther was known for initiating the Protestant Reformation, which went against the many dogmas of the Catholic Church in his day.
Currently, this is a name widely used in Portugal and Brazil and in other countries in Latin America and Europe.
