Teutonic, ‘ might or power of Hilda,’ or ‘ mighty battle-maid,’ it is, in German and French, Mathilde: German ana French th naturally becomes t in Anglicisms. Hilda (q. v.) is ‘battle-maid’, but Mat- may be either magd, ‘a maid,’ or, less probably, macht, ‘might,’ ‘strength,’ for the usual radical for ‘might’, ‘power,’ ‘strength’ is wald. It is still—despite its social chute—an impressive name to those who recall Matilda, wife of Henry the Fowler (at the head of the Holy Roman Empire in 913-36) and ‘devoted to piety and good works’, as Dawson pithily remarks.
