A male name. Old German Malgar, apparently a compound of malv from malvjan ‘to grind' and gairu ‘spear’. The name was introduced into England by the Normans in the French form Mauger, which was used as a christian name until the 18th C in the Vavasour family which descended from one Mauger who held lands in vavasoury in the reign of Henry I.
