A male name. Latin Mauritius ‘a Moor’; the name of a martyr said to have belonged to the Theban legion and to have been martyred in Switzerland a.d. 286. The name is found in use in England from the 11th C, sometimes in the French form Meurisse, but more often in the English Moris or Morris. It gave rise to the surnames Morris, Morriss, Maurice, Morison, Morrison, Morson, Morse, Morin, and Morcock. Maurice has now replaced Morris as the usual spelling of the christian name. It has been used in Ireland to render the native Moriertagh (Moriarty) ‘sea warrior'. The Welsh form is Meuriz.
