Fabius Maximus, and Scipio Aemilianus, with hope that his son would imitate their vertues (Hieronymus Gebvilerius defamilia Austriaca).’ It became a favourite name in Germany, particularly in the abbreviated form Max, and is occasionally used in England.
Latin Maximi(us Æm)ilianus, ‘greatest Aemilianus,’ i. e. the most important man in the gens Æmilia. It has for centuries been a favourite with Central European royalty and aristocracy: cf. the Maximilian of Colonel T. f. Tweed’s second and better novel.
